Image History
A detailed cross and crown relief located on a
Sicilian Society tomb in Metairie Cemetery. New
Orleans was the largest port of imigration for
Sicilian immigrants surpassing New York. Sicilian
society tombs are located throughout the city of New
Orleans and are still being used today for interments.
Metairie Cemetery was established in 1872 on land
that was once a racetrack. Oddly enough, a portion
of the property was used to bury the thousands of
yellow fever victims that died in the epidemic of 1853.
Louisiana legends who are buried here range from
governors to Storyville madams.
"Everytime I close my eyes blowing that trumpet
of mine – I look right into the heart of good old New Orleans
– it has given me something to live for." –Louis
Armstrong
