Image History
Jean Lafitte's Blacksmith shop is located
in the heart of the "Vieux Carre" (Old Quarter) at 941 Bourbon
Street. The pirate Jean Lafitte nor his brother ever stepped
foot in this building, that is local legend. The exact date
of this structure is unknown, but the construction is typical
of buildings during the period of 1730-1845. Historically covered
in plaster, the briquette entre poteaux (brick between
posts) construction has been left exposed. The Vieux Carre Commission
requires the owners to maintain necessary repairs to preserve
the structure. Hopefully, this National Landmark will be around
for another 250+ years.
"Everytime I close my eyes blowing that trumpet
of mine – I look right into the heart of good old New Orleans
– it has given me something to live for." –Louis
Armstrong
