St. Louis Cathedral in Jackson Square. There have
been 4 churches built on this site. One of the
churches which no longer stands perished in the great
fire of 1788 in which 85% of the city burned to the
ground. The present church is the result of a major
renovation done around the 1850's. An interesting
note, in 1794 when the walls of the cityís first
cemetery were being demolished those bricks were used
to build another St. Louis Cathedral. Today,
architectural elements from our first city of the dead
are now incorporated into one of the most significant
landmarks surrounding the city of the living.
"Everytime I close my eyes blowing that trumpet
of mine – I look right into the heart of good old New Orleans
– it has given me something to live for." –Louis
Armstrong
