Jax Beer was created in 1891. The brewery was the largest independent business of its kind in the south and the tenth largest single-plant brewery in the country. Fifty years ago, New Orleans was proclaimed the "brewing capital of the South." And before Prohibition, there were about a dozen breweries all competing for the beer drinker's dollar in our city; the choices were intoxicating. Jax closed around 1973. Today the building still stands and features shops and restaurants near the French Quarter.
"Everytime I close my eyes blowing that trumpet
of mine – I look right into the heart of good old New Orleans
– it has given me something to live for." –Louis
Armstrong
